Ralph Nader Demands That the NHTSA Recalls Tesla's Autopilot

August 15, 2022

According to a news report published on roadandtrack.com, Ralph Nader is calling on the National Highway Transportation Safety Adminstration to recall Tesla's Autopilot driver-assistance feature. Nadar, the famous consumer advocate, states that Tesla should not have been permitted to put the self-driving technology in its motor vehicles.

Mr. Nadar stated that Tesla's deployment of its so-called "Full Self-Driving" technology is "one of the most dangerous and irresponsible actions" taken by an automaker in decades. Nader followed that statement with, Tesla should not have put the self-driving vehicle technology in its motor vehicles.

Nader is one of a growing number of public officials, consumers, and safety experts who have rebuked Tesla's cavalier approach to self-driving technology. Tesla has offered its "Full Self-Driving" package on its automobilessince 2016. The company promised that its vehicles would be able to self-drive across the United States by 2017. However, Tesla has yet to deliver the fully autonomous feature and the technology still puts all responsibility on the driver.

There are several self-driving vehicles driving through red lights, swerving out of lanes, driving in the wrong direction, and barely missing pedestrians and other vehicles in traffic. A pro-Tesla news website reported watching a video showing a Tesla failing to recognize a child dummy that was crossing its path. The Tesla then struck the simulated child.

Nader also pointed out that overconfidence in their Autopilot system has already caused several accidents and fatalities. The NHTSA has been "investigating" the problem for several years without action. The NHTSA can pressure automakers to recall motor vehicles that have safety defects. Mr. Nadar is calling on the NHTSA to recall Tesla's Autopilot. He said that the federal governemtn shouldn't permit the vehicles with "malfunctioning software" to be on the same streets where children walk to school. He also stated that "no one is above the laws of manslaughter."
