Ocala Event Urges Drivers to Be Patient and Obey Traffic Devices

August 12, 2022

FLORIDA - A news report published on states that motorists traveling through the intersection of Pine Avenue and Silver Springs Boulevard were given a reminder to "Always Stop On Red."

Twenty volunteers from local and state agencies put on bright green vests and stood and crossed the roadways at the crosswalks displaying signs reminding drivers to stop at red traffic lights. Many drivers honked their vehicles' horns and waved to offer up their support and approval.

According to the Institute for Highway Safety, nearly 1,000 people are tragically killed each year throughout the United States in traffic accidents involving red light running. More than 115,000 people were injured in accidents caused by red light runners in 2020.

The Federal Highway Administration designated Aug. 7-13 as "National Stop on Red Week" in an effort to educate drivers about the hazards of red-light running. The campaign was designed to to help reduce the number and severity of all traffic accidents, according to a Florida Department of Transportation District Five press release. The department is hosting the Ocala event.

The follgowing aencies attended or supported the event, the Florida Department of Transportation, Ocala Marion Transportation Planning Organization, National Coalition for Safer Roads, Marion County Sheriff's Office, Marion County, City of Ocala Police Department, City of Ocala, and the Ocala Chamber of Commerce. The week-long awareness event is designed to encourage everyone to stop at red lights and end crashes with other vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists.

Florida Department of Transportation is organizing several events throughout the state of Florida as part of the national campaign to stress the importance of obeying traffic signs and devices.

Many of those who lost loved ones in motor vehicle accidents also attended the event to share their tragic stories and help remind motorists to watch out for cyclists and pedestrians. The message is clear, "Be patient and stop" for stop signs and red lights because you might save somebody's life.

Florida Department of Transportation officers emphasized the importance of looking out for and using extra caution around bicyclists and pedestrians.
