New Study Shows Fatal Traffic Fatalities Increased by 21% in Georgia

August 08, 2022

AUGUSTA, GEORGIA  According to an online news report published on, a national nonprofit organization reports that Georgia's traffic fatalities have swelled 21 percent since 2019.

The report also states that Richmond County traffic accident deaths are the highest recorded in five years. Georgia's increase in traffic fatalities is above the national increase of 19% in the same period.

According to T.R.I.P., a national transportation research nonprofit organization, traffic fatalities started to rise rapidly in 2020, although motor vehicle travel plunged due to the COVID pandemic. Traffic accident deaths continued to rise in 2021 while typical vehicle travel volume rose to near pre-pandemic levels.

Georgia Traffic Fatality Statistics:

  • Traffic fatalities in 2019 were 1,491
  • Traffic fatalities in 2020 were 1,664
  • Traffic fatalities in 2021    were 1,806
  • The 2019-2021 Traffic Fatality Change was +21 percent

The growth in traffic accident deaths appears to be primarily related to the increase in risky driving behaviors, according to T.R.I.P.

In October 2021, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration uncovered that "after the declaration of the public health emergency in March 2020, driving patterns and behaviors in the United States changed significantly. Of the drivers who remained on the roads, some engaged in riskier behavior, including speeding, failure to wear seat belts, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs."

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also reported that there had been an increase in the number of people tragically killed in alcohol-involved accidents. The number of fatal drunk driving accidents increased by nine percent from 2019 to 2020 and increased by five percent from 2020 to 2021.

The number of people who were killed due to being unrestrained increased fifteen percent from 2019 to 2020 and three percent from 2020 to 2021. The number of people tragically killed in speeding-related accidents grew by eleven percent from 2019 to 2020 and five percent from 2020 to 2021.
