New Islands Expressway Bridge Crash Raises Safety Concerns

July 15, 2022

SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - According to an online accident news article published on wsav.com, residents are voicing their concerns about the safety of the new Islands Expressway Bridge.*

The Islands Expressway Bridge spans the Wilmington River. Residents who live in the area report that the bridge isn't safe, and they fear that more severe accidents will occur on the bridge.

According to Causton Bluff's Homeowners Association representative Susan Brinkley, the newly opened bridge had its first accident at 6:40 in the morning this past Friday. She stated that the accident was a "t-bone" type of accident. Brinkley disclosed to WSAV that they have called for a traffic light since the beginning of the construction. However, there has been no response from city officials. Susan also stated that there were many accidents during the bridge's construction.

Local area residents believe that the bridge creates a severe safety issue due to the housing developments that are located on either side of the road.

According to Susan Brinkley, city officials stated that a traffic study was completed back in 2019, and no traffic signal was required. The residents stated that they wanted to be proactive rather than reactive concerning the issue. Brinkley wants to have the light put in before a fatal accident should occur.

County commission Chairman Chester Ellis said that the Georgia Department had already had a meeting with engineers, county staff, and managers about the safety concerns. Ellis reported that he would be briefed about the results of the meeting.
