NHTSA Initiates New Campaigns to End Distracted Driving Crashes
A news report published on thevideoink.com states that distracted driving is a deadly, ongoing problem for innocent motorists.*
Eating, texting, reading, applying makeup, taking selfies, or fidgeting with the stereo are preventable distractions that can cause severe accidents. Tragically, distracted driving is one of the leading causes of deadly accidents in Georgia and throughout the United States.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that there were 3,100 people tragically killed in distracted driving accidents in 2020. The news report claims the NHTSA reported that distracted driving accidents accounted for a total of 420,000 deaths.
The NHTSA has launched a campaign called "U Drive. U Text. U Pay." This campaign focuses on the dangers of distracted driving, specifically the use of mobile devices while driving. The "U Drive. U Text. U Pay" The news report states that several behaviors are dangerous, including:
- Browsing Social Media
- Uploading Videos or Photos
- Replying to Emails
- Taking Selfies
These behaviors instantly increase the risk of causing a traffic accident. Texting while driving is considered the most dangerous driving behavior. When someone replies to a text message, the driver's cognitive ability and focus are removed from driving.
An Advocates for Auto and Highway Safety study discovered that 70% of drivers admit to using a cell phone while driving. About 80% of drivers said that they are concerned about the issue of distracted driving and think law enforcement isn't doing enough to end distracted driving.
Georgia's Hands-Free Law
In 2018, Georgia lawmakers and the governor passed Georgia's Hands-Free Law, which prohibits drivers from touching their cellphone while driving.
