Two Seriously Injured in Douglas Hayride Trailer Accident

October 30, 2010

As a fall chill begins to fill the air and the leaves begin to change, Halloween is approaching. This means laughing children in costumes, carnivals with haunted houses and fun hayrides. A Douglas hayride turned into tragedy last week when 2 people were seriously injured while they were on a church hayride outing.

A total of 27 church members were injured when a car collided with the trailer that was being used for the hayride as it moved slowly along Route 64. Sadly, hayrides can be dangerous because the trailers used are not really designed for passengers and have no safety equipment. At Montlick and Associates, Attorneys at Law, we have many years of experience representing those injured in trailer accidents including hayrides.

Hayrides on trailers which are not designed to carry passengers pose a substantial risk of serious injury if they are involved in a collision with another vehicle. There are absolutely no structural protections or safety restraints to protect passengers from impact or prevent ejection from the trailer. Frequently, the driver of trailers on hayrides have little experience pulling a trailer which means they may make mistakes because they are unfamiliar with trailer blind spots, greater braking response time and wider turning radius. Even if the driver of a trailer being used for a hayride has to stop suddenly, it is easy for those riding on the trailer to fall off.

Fortunately, all of the church members involved in the Douglas hayride are expected to survive. This is often not the case as hayride trailer accidents frequently result in catastrophic injuries including traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and even fatalities. At Montlick and Associates, Attorneys at Law, we are aware of the multitude of accidents that occur on Halloween and church hayrides. These hayrides use trailers that are not subject to regulation like other vehicles. There is also often insufficient supervision of children riding on these cargo trailers.
