Mercedes Recalls Car with its Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC System

April 15, 2022

According to an online recall announcement reported on KBB.com, Mercedes-Benz just issued a recall for approximately 8,000 motor vehicles.

The affected vehicles include most of Mercedes-Benz's current lineup that is equipped with both the Mercedes-Benz adaptive cruise control system called "Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC," and the heated steering wheel option.

The recalled models include:

  • 2022 AMG E63 S
  • 2022 AMG GT43
  • 2022 AMG GT53
  • 2022 S500
  • 2022 AMG EQS
  • 2022 EQS450
  • 2022 EQS58
  • 2022 AMG GT63 S
  • 2022 C300
  • 2022 CLS450
  • 2022 AMG SL63
  • 2022 AMG SL55
  • 2021 AMG CLS53
  • 2021 AMG E63 Wagon S
  • 2021-2022 AMG E53
  • 2021-2022 E350
  • 2021-2022 E450 Cabriolet
  • 2021-2022 E450 Coupe
  • 2021-2022 E450 Wagon
  • 2021-2022 E450
  • 2021-2022 AMG E53 Cabriolet
  • 2021-2022 AMG E53 Coupe
  • 2021-2022 S580
  • 2021-2022 Maybach S580

In company documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Mercedes-Benz explains that the defect is a software issue and concerns the hand detection control unit. Essentially, the hands-off detection sensor "may not detect when the driver’s hands are away from the steering wheel.”

Mercedes-Benz explained in the recall notice that the issue could prevent DISTRONIC system from functioning. This would affect the system's warnings to grab the steering wheel, placing a call to first responders during an emergency, and the Active Emergency Stop Assist. Mercedes-Benz dealers will fix the issue and the recall repairs will be performed at no charge.
