Louisville Police Provide Wrong-way Driver Safety Tips

November 07, 2021

LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY  - A news article published on wdrb.com reports that there have been many wrong-way accidents in Louisville, Kentucky.  The Louisville Police is offering safety advice to drivers in case you or a loved one faces a wrong-way driver.*

According to the Louisville Metro Police, there have been four wrong-way collisions in the past three weeks.  Some of the accidents were fatal.  The Louisville Metro Police stated that most of the fatalities were the wrong-way driver.  However, one pedestrian was tragically struck and killed by a hit-and-run wrong way driver in the city.  The hit-and-run driver fled the collision and was driving on the wrong side of the road when he hit the pedestrian.

The Louisville Metro Police stated that their officers have worked around one dozen wrong-way accidents in 2021, and they have some safety advice on what drivers should do when facing a wrong-way driver.  The Louisville Metro Police believe the best strategy is to "take yourself out of the equation."

Sergeant Ron Fey, a Louisville Metro Police Department Traffic Unit investigator, says it is best to pull your car over immediately when a driver is driving in the wrong direction and approaching your car.  In some wrong-way driving incidents, it s an elderly driver who is confused.  However, these incidents are typically caused by impaired drivers.  Therefore, it is likely that the intoxicated driver will not react quickly enough to turn out of the way to avoid the accident.  The best approach for you to try to avoid the crash.

The Louisville Metro Police Department is currently working with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) to increase road safety.  The agencies are adding additional lighting and signage in the most problematic areas.  The LMPD is also operating a new initiative that increases traffic officer presence on freeways to stop reckless drivers.

If you see a wrong-way driver be sure to call 911 and inform law enforcement authorities about the potentially deadly situation.
