Atlanta Police Officer Working an Accident on I-75 is Struck By a Car

October 26, 2021

ATLANTA, GEORGIA - A news article published on reports that the Atlanta Police Department wants all drivers to see the body camera video of an officer struck by a car.  The video shows an officer working an accident scene on the shoulder of Interstate 75 getting struck by a vehicle.  The Atlanta Police Department stated that the body camera video illustrates the need for motorists to obey Georgia's Move Over Law.

The victim, a nine-year Atlanta Police Department veteran, remains on leave nearly two weeks after he was struck by a car.  According to the report, the accident occurred just after the morning rush hour. The officer was taking photographs and documenting a separate accident scene on the shoulder of the interstate prior to the crash.

The Atlanta Police Department determined that the oncoming motor vehicle was "traveling too fast for the wet conditions and lost control" as the vehicle approached the crash scene.  The motorist who collided with the officer received a citation for driving too fast for conditions.

Georgia's Move Over Law has been in effect for over 18 years.

The Atlanta Police Department reminds drivers of Georgia's Move Over Law, which was made to prevent these types of accidents.  Georgia's Move Over Law requires drivers to move over one lane when approaching emergency vehicles that are stopped along the side of the road if possible.  If not, motor vehicles that cannot move over must reduce their speed so that they can stop immediately.  Moreover, Georgia's Move Over Law pertains to all emergency vehicles parked along the side of the road.  About five years ago, utility crews were added to the law.
