Delaware Bill Increases Transparency Around Crash Data

September 30, 2021

DELAWARE - A news article published on GOVTECH.COM reports that the Delaware governor signed into law a new bill that allows the Delaware Department of Transportation to publish unidentifiable crash data with the public from the department's website.  The idea is to help educate the public concerning Delaware's most dangerous intersections for drivers and pedestrians.

The new law will also help safety officials in the state identify the most dangerous intersections and determine why these accidents occur in the first place.  Senate Bill 28 also aims to bolster public access to Delaware's crash statistics and reports.  The information will be rolled out when the new DelDOT's website is published online.  Users will be able to access the website for free and look at crash data for a specific intersection.

The public was required to file a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to obtain the information in the past.

In the past, the Delaware Online/The News Journal has fought for access to accident data to publish reports about Delaware's most dangerous intersections.

The new law sets the data requirements and must include:

  1. An accident classification
  2. The manner of impact
  3. Drug or alcohol involvement
  4. Date and time of the crash
  5. The road conditions, including road surface, lighting, and weather
  6. Helmet and seat belt use
  7. The accident's location
  8. Any primary contributing factors

There is no release date for the new website, but the Department of Technology and Information affirmed that the website would not take a long time to create.  Accident reports from the Delaware State Police may also be available for a standard $25 fee.

It is well documented that most accidents can be prevented with a little extra care and safety education.  Since 1984, Montlick & Associates has been dedicated to keeping children and families safe on the roadway.  Our commitment runs deep through our extensive, award-winning public service programs that provide people the information they need to avoid injuries.  To learn about our Don't Drink and Drive Campaign, Child Passenger Safety Programs, Booster Seat Campaign and much more, visit montlick.com and click on “community service,” or simply click here.
