National Transport Safety Board Investigates Fatal Tesla Accident in Florida

September 30, 2021

FLORIDA - A Tesla Model 3, while possibly using Autopilot, left the road and crashed into a tree.

According to the National Transport Safety Board (NTSB), the federal agency is sending several accident investigators to investigate a fatal Tesla Model 3 accident in Florida.  Two people tragically passed away in the tragic accident, according to several news reports.

Local law enforcement officials state that it was not clear if the operator was using the vehicle's Autopilot driver-assist feature or not.  The National Transportation Safety Board stated that they would send three accident investigators to investigate the fatal Tesla accident in Coral Gables, Florida.

Tesla's Autopilot automatically brakes, accelerates and steers the vehicle, but Autopilot is not fully autonomous.

The NTSB reported that it was focusing its investigation on the operation of the car and the post-accident fire that consumed the car.

NTSB spokesman Peter Knudson stated that the NTSB always pays particularly close attention to accidents involving newer technology.  The NTSB team will document the crash site and the car, gather witness statements and any video camera footage, and determine what information they can acquire from Tesla and the Tesla Model 3.  The NTSB expects to have completed its preliminary report in approximately 30 days.
