Michigan State Police Are Worried About the 430% Increase in Auto Accidents Involving Drivers High on Marijuana

September 27, 2021

According to Michigan State Police's Lieutenant Derrick Carroll, law enforcement agencies across Michigan have observed a spike in accidents since marijuana was legalized in Michigan.  Lieutenant Carroll stated that there had been an increase of 140% of total marijuana-related accidents and a 430% increase in injury accidents involving marijuana use while driving.

Lt. Carroll affirmed that law enforcement agencies conduct field sobriety tests to detect driving under the influence of all drugs and alcohol, including marijuana.  For people who are involved in accidents and there is a suspicion of impaired driving, the suspected intoxicated driver will be tested to determine their impairment.

State Police say that people cannot drive while under the influence of any narcotic, medication, drug, or alcohol.  If a driver is intoxicated with any type of intoxicant, they will be arrested and charged for driving under the influence.  Most people may not be aware that marijuana does impair your judgment and ability to drive a motor vehicle.  According to Lt. Carroll, a lot of people believe that they are okay to drive when they are not.

One of the common myths that users of marijuana will say is that they drive better while high on marijuana because they drive slower.  However, newly gathered data shows that most people who were arrested for driving while under the influence of marijuana were initially stopped for speeding.  When someone is high on marijuana, their reflexes, ability to drive, and their judgment are all impaired. In other words, it is not that they are driving slower, but their movements are slower, Carroll says.
