Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Study Shows New Auto Safety Technology Reduces Fatal Teen Driver Accidents by up to 75%
A new study shows that auto safety technology has a substantial impact on reducing fatal teen driver accidents. New technology is being developed to help keep teen drivers safe.
Since teenage drivers are inexperienced drivers, they tend to have many more fatal accidents than the other age groups. According to a study published by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), new auto safety technology may be able to reduce fatal teen driver accidents by up to 75%.
The latest safety technology includes lane departure warnings, blind spot monitoring and front-end crash avoidance systems. Example technology made specifically for teen drivers, include GM's Teen Driver, Ford's My Key, and Hyundai's BlueLink. According to the study, these technologies save lives.
IIHS Research Scientist Alexandra Mueller reports most teens end up driving older vehicles, which do not have these technologies. Ms. Mueller stated that her study also shows that smartphone apps can help parents teach effective safe driving habits. However, auto manufacturers need to offer these safety technologies and apps on more models and make parents aware of their presence in the vehicles.
