Purdue Study Finds Nighttime Driving Restrictions Reduce Teen Driver Deaths

September 15, 2021

WEST LAFAYETTE, INDIANA - A research article published on PURDUE.EDU states that the leading cause of death for teenagers is fatal motor vehicle accidents, and unsafe driving accounts for most of the accidents.

The research study from Purdue University reported that preventing new drivers from carrying several passengers at night would reduce fatal teen accidents by 50%.  The Purdue study analyzed the outcomes of a ban on transporting multiple passengers during the hours of 11 p.m. to 4:59 a.m. for new drivers under the age of 21.

This ban was implemented in the Australian state of New South Wales back in July 2007.  The results of the ban showed that harsher restrictions tended to dissuade teenagers from obtaining driver's licenses and starting to drive.  The ban also appeared to have a persistent effect on driving behavior.

According to the news report, there were reductions in nighttime multipassenger accidents in the drivers' second and third years of driving.

The research paper supplements previous literature on teen driving, which confirms that restrictions can reduce accidents but the changes do not seem to lead to behavioral changes.

The findings by the Purdue researchers recommend policies that put restrictions on teenagers' driving behavior, particularly when executed at the correct time, could improve safety and allow teens to develop driving skills.

It is well documented that most accidents can be prevented with a little extra care and safety education.  Since 1984, Montlick & Associates has been dedicated to keeping children and families safe on the roadway.  Our commitment runs deep through our extensive, award-winning public service programs that provide people the information they need to avoid injuries.  To learn about our Don't Drink and Drive Campaign, Child Passenger Safety Programs, Booster Seat Campaign and much more, visit montlick.com and click on “community service,” or simply click here.
