Purchasing New Cars for Teen Drivers Might Be the Smartest and Safest Idea

September 10, 2021

According to an article published on AJC.COM, it might be a good idea to purchase a new car for your teen driver. Most parents choose to purchase a used car for their teen driver because of the cost savings and because of their child's inexperience. However, purchasing a newer vehicle for your teen driver might be the best choice for many reasons.

First, newer cars have the latest safety technology that could save a child's life. Newer cars now come with rear and front bumper sensors, backup cameras, blind-spot monitors, and lane departure technology that help drivers avoid accidents.

report published by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) showed teens were more likely to have an accident or die in an accident than adult drivers. Their findings also show how much technology can alleviate teen crashes, injuries, and deaths. The IIHS report states that teens are four times more likely to have an accident than 20 years old or older drivers. According to the report, teen drivers are more likely to drive recklessly, speed, drive distracted, not wear their seatbelts, and drive while impaired.

Automobile technology designed particularly for teens could decrease these risks. For example, some car manufacturers offer car monitoring programs and technology that set speed limits, locks stereos and gear shifters if the driver does not wear the seatbelt. There are also new apps that notify parents when teen drivers attempt to drive outside of their curfew.

IIHS has affirmed that using these types of technologies does make teen driving safer. These features were shown to make teen accidents less severe 41% of the time. The technology also reduced the chance of teen injury by 47% and reduced teen fatalities by 78%.
