Tesla's Musk Reiterates His Vision for Safe Full Self-Driving Vehicles
Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk reiterated his vision for a Full Self-Driving fleet.
Musk also stated that Tesla would launch a driver-assist system that is allegedly 10x safer than a typical human driver. Musk also reiterated Tesla's vision of making a driver-assist suite that is 1,000% safer than human drivers.
Tesla's Autopilot and Full Self-Driving Beta were formally classified as SAE Level 2 systems. Tesla stated that drivers will still be required to keep their hands on the steering wheel. By making the driver maintain their hands on the steering wheel, the driver is able to resume manual control over the vehicle at any time. At this time, other automakers such as Mercedes-Benz have already released SAE Level 3 systems that operate in limited conditions. Tesla may continue the requirement for drivers to keep their hands on the wheel, even though Tesla's Autopilot and Full Self-Driving systems are capable of navigating hands-free a large number of roads and various conditions today. However, there are various accidents being investigated when the Autopilot feature was engaged and subsequently the Tesla vehicle crashed causing injuries and even death.
