NHTSA is Investigating 30 Tesla Accidents

August 26, 2021

WASHINGTON, DC - A news report on reuters.com states that U.S. auto safety regulators from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the agency had opened 30 investigations into Tesla accidents.  The investigations involve ten fatalities that may have occurred when the vehicles advanced driver assistance systems were engaged, known as Tesla's Autopilot.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has openly criticized Tesla's absence of Autopilot system safeguards.  Tesla's Autopilot handles some of the driving tasks and has been linked to crashes in at least three Tesla vehicles.

The issue of fatal Tesla's Autopilot accidents attracted new attention following a severe Texas crash back on April 17.  The accident tragically killed two men in Texas.  Law enforcement officers, in that case, believe that there was no one was behind the wheel of the Tesla prior to the crash.

U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell, a U.S. Senate Commerce Committee chairperson, detailed a few Tesla accidents while the panel voted against new regulations to push the adoption of self-driving vehicles on U.S. roadways.  Senator Cantwell stated that she feels that she hears about another Autopilot accident each week.

The NHTSA withdrew its designation that certain newer Tesla Model 3 and Model Y motor vehicles had four advanced safety features when Tesla reported that it was removing radar sensors and transitioning over to a camera-based Autopilot system.  The NHTSA stated that after it discussed the issue with Tesla, the motor company brought back the lane departure warning specification.
