Law Enforcement Officers Report Speeding is a Serious, Growing Problem
OHIO - Labor Day is quickly approaching and many traffic safety experts and law enforcement agencies are desperately trying to find new ways to slow motorsists down and save lives.
The Ohio Highway Patrol has issued 2,870 citations to people driving over 100 miles per hour and the year is not over. This accounts for an increase of 37% over last year. Also, the Ohio Highway Patrol has issued 59,245 traffic tickets to drivers who exceeded the posted speed limit by 20mph. This was an increase of 59% over last year at this time.
According to Sergeant Nathan E. Dennis of the Public Relations Office in the State Patrol in Columbus there is a growing problem on the roads. Sergeant Dennis also stated that because Labor Day weekend is a few weeks away this means more people will be on the roads. Typically, when the number of drivers goes down, the number of traffic fatalities also goes down. However, the opposite happened in the past two years. The number of drivers are down, but the number of traffic deaths have climbed.
The National Safety Council and the Governor’s Highway Safety Association expected a reduction in the number of road fatalities, however the numbers grew. The National Highway Traffic Safety Agency stated that 38,680 people were tragically killed in auto accidents in 2020. This is an increase of 7.2% over 2019. This was the highest number of traffic fatalities since 2007..
