Atlanta Streets to Receive 10,000 Lights to Improve Safety
ATLANTA, GEORGIA - About 10,000 new street lights are being installed throughout the city of Atlanta. Atlanta city leaders are hoping the added lighting will improve safety, cut down on crime, and reduce accidents.
According to Atlanta City Councilwoman Natalyn Archibong, "More illumination will keep our community safer."
Safety advocates believe that installing 10,000 street lights throughout the city will improve traffic safety and reduce crime.
Archibong also stated that illumination deters crime, and where there is darkness, bad behavior can happen out of the sight of police officers and neighbors.
The initiative is part of Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms' "One Atlanta - Light Up the Night" program. Georgia Power is installing the street lights in select areas based on traffic accidents, crime, and existing lighting.
While the primary focus on improved lighting is more safety and better security, the added bonus is "a reduction in energy usage and a lower carbon footprint."
