Record Holiday Travel Projected for the Fourth of July Weekend
AAA predicts this Fourth of July holiday weekend will break all pre-pandemic travel records. Industry experts say the high volume of travelers would "bring some headaches for those heading out."
AAA is estimating that approximately 50 million people will be traveling during the 4th of July holiday weekend. According to AAA, out of the approximately 43.6 million people presumed to drive along the nation's highways, 620,000 travelers with be taking a cruise, and another 3.5 million will travel by air. AAA's estimate is about 13 million higher than last summer.
According to Mark Jenkins, a spokesman for AAA, many people enjoy road trips because they give people the feeling being free. Mr. Jenkins also believes that the higher gas prices will not deter Americans from taking road trips this holiday weekend as people have waited a long time to go on a trip. Jenkins feels motorists will likely offset higher fuel costs by cutting back on other expenses such as dining out and lodging.
AAA is reporting that fuel prices are the highest they have been in over seven years. Moreover, the national average price for regular unleaded is at $3.09 per gallon. The price per gallon was only $2.17 last year, and $3.04 a week ago.
Travelers may also face hotel room and rental car shortages. Airline ticket sales have also grown by double digits over the past several months. AAA warns airline passengers to pack necessities and patience when they embark on their respective journeys.
AAA's Vice President of Travel, Debbie Haas, stated that the country is seeing a "resurgence in air travel, and the industry is working to keep pace with the soaring demand." It is recommended that domestic ticket holders arrive at the airport early; at least 2-3 hours before the scheduled flight as lines will be longer and slower than normal.
