What is Medical Payments Coverage (Med Pay) in Georgia?

August 02, 2021

Med Pay is a type of insurance that a driver can purchase in Georgia in conjunction with an automobile insurance policy.  Med pay is short for Medical Payments Coverage, and it is considered "no-fault" coverage that covers medical expenses up to the med pay benefit limit tof the driver and occupants regardless of the fault of the driver.  For example, if the driver of a car has $5,000 in Med Pay benefits coverage and the driver hits a tree and is injured, the driver may receive up to the limit of the coverage of $5,000 in reimbursement of medical bills incurred from the incident.

Med Pay is primary to health insurance, meaning medical providers may want to exhaust the med pay benefits on an automobile policy first before billing health insurance. Sometimes health insurance may not pay any benefits until med pay is exhausted, depending on the type of health insurance a person has at the time of the incident.  Med pay policies may range from five hundred dollars to several tens of thousands of dollars depending on the insurance carrier.

Med pay coverage also applies to each passenger and is not a combined amount.  For example, if a driver has three passengers and a $5,000 med pay benefit, each claimant could receive up to $5,000 in med pay reimbursement of medical bills, regardless of fault.  If you have any questions regarding insurance, it is always wise to speak to a licensed insurance agent about benefits that may be available to you. It is important to compare different rates and coverages from multiple insurance companies in order to find the best coverage and best rate for you and your family.  To learn more about medical payment coverage, do not hesitate to contact one of our personal injury attorneys who can review your current automobile insurance benefits with you.
