JMIR Study States That Speech Data Collected by Voice Assistants Can Predict Driving-Accident Risks in Seniors

April 16, 2021

JAPAN - According to a new Japanese Journal of Medical Internet Research (JMIR) study, voice assistants with special cognitive impairment features can determine a person's driving-accident risk.  The study published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research discovered that drivers who were 60 years or older who were in accidents or near accidents had notable changes in their speech features, which indicates that they suffered from some cognitive impairments.

The researchers stated that speech in daily life could be used to help cognitive impairments that affect driving safety.  Speaking involves several interacting cognitive abilities, including attention, executive functions, and memory, which are necessary for safe driving.  There were 60 participants in the study.  Of those studies, 23 senior participants reported having near-accidents, two participants reported being in an accident, and one participant reported being in a near-accident and accident.

The study's researchers reported that they did not find any meaningful differences in cognitive assessment variables between the individuals who reported accidents or near-accidents and those who did not.  However, the researchers discovered ten meaningful differences between the groups' speech features.  The participants who were involved in accidents or near-accidents had jitters and decreased speech rate and presented long pauses and increased response time.

It is well documented that most accidents can be prevented with a little extra care and safety education.  Since 1984, Montlick & Associates has been dedicated to keeping children and families safe on the roadway.  Our commitment runs deep through our extensive, award-winning public service programs that provide people the information they need to avoid injuries.  To learn about our Don't Drink and Drive Campaign, Child Passenger Safety Programs, Booster Seat Campaign and much more, visit montlick.com and click on “community service,” or simply click here.
