Nevada Highway Patrol Reports a Spike in Wrong-way Driver Calls and Accidents

April 09, 2021

LAS VEGAS, NV - The Nevada Highway Patrol Southern Command has reported that the number of wrong-way driver calls has surged in 2021.  The Nevada Highway Patrol reported that they have received around 140 phone calls from January 1 to April 6 in 2021. During the same time frame in 2020, there were 128 wrong-way calls. According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, this troubling trend has law enforcement officials throughout the United States initiating new safety campaigns.

The Nevada Highway Patrol has published the following list of safety recommendations to help drivers stay safe and improve their chances of avoiding a collision with a wrong-way driver.

Reduce Your Speed:  Speeding reduces the amount of time the driver has to respond and react to a wrong-way driver.

Call *NHP:  If you witness a wrong-way driver, drunk driving, or a driver engaging in dangerous driving, contact the Nevada Highway Patrol by dialing 911, *NHP, or *647 on your cellphone.

Don't Drive Distracted:  The Nevada Highway Patrol reminds drivers not to use their cell phones, GSP, or any other electronic devices. Other forms of distracted driving include, reading, playing with the radio, eating, applying makeup, and not paying attention to the road ahead.

Drive Defensively:  Drivers should remain alert and watch out for hazards around their vehicle so that they have more time to react.

Avoid Driving in the Left Lane (particularly between 11 PM and 6 AM):  Most wrong-way accidents occurred in the far-left travel lane.

Drive Sober:  The Nevada Office of Traffic Safety data reported that 90% of fatal wrong-way accidents in 2019 involved an intoxicated driver.

It is well documented that most accidents can be prevented with a little extra care and safety education.  Since 1984, Montlick & Associates has been dedicated to keeping children and families safe on the roadway.  Our commitment runs deep through our extensive, award-winning public service programs that provide people the information they need to avoid injuries.  To learn about our Don't Drink and Drive Campaign, Child Passenger Safety Programs, Booster Seat Campaign and much more, visit montlick.com and click on “community service,” or simply click here.
