Deadly Collisions Are Rising Although A Lot of People Are Working From Home

February 05, 2021

MIAMI, FL - There have been fewer motor vehicles on the road as many workers are continuing to work from home.  However, the reduced traffic volume has not decreased the number of deadly accidents.  Fatal accidents have been steadily increasing.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), over 28,000 people have died in motor vehicle accidents during the initial nine months of 2020. This accounts for an increase in fatalities of about 4.6% from 2019.

The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) reported that the interstates, highways, and local roads are wide open, leading many to speed.

AAA and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducted accident tests to measure collisions' impact with nominal speed increases. At 40 mph, the driver compartment is mostly intact. However, as speeds reach around 55 mph, the damage and likelihood of serious injuries are significant. At speeds around 55 mph, there is an increased likelihood of the occupants sustaining facial fractures, brain injuries, or lower leg injuries, according to IIHS President David Harkey.

Mr. Harkey believes that law enforcement and speed cameras are vital to enforcing speed limits and keeping the roadways safe from speeders. He also stated that slowing down helps drivers avoid accidents.

It is well documented that most accidents can be prevented with a little extra care and safety education.  Since 1984, Montlick & Associates has been dedicated to keeping children and families safe on the roadway.  Our commitment runs deep through our extensive, award-winning public service programs that provide people the information they need to avoid injuries.  To learn about our Don't Drink and Drive Campaign, Child Passenger Safety Programs, Booster Seat Campaign and much more, visit montlick.com and click on “community service,” or simply click here.
