GDOT and Atlanta Police Closed I-75, I-85, and I-285 to Conduct Fatal Accident Reconstructions
ATLANTA, GA - The Atlanta Police Department and the Georgia Department of Transportation closed down parts of I-75, I-85, and I-285 to conduct fatal trafffic accident reconstructions.
The Atlanta Police Department distributed an announcement concerning the interstate shutdowns by email to media outlets. The statement detailed how the Atlanta Police's Accident Investigations Unit partnered with its Highway Emergency Response Operators (HERO) and the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) to conduct two fatal traffic reconstructions that necessitated two separate interstate freeway closings.
On January 28, 2021, at 3 a.m., I-75 southbound by the Northside Drive exit and I-85 southbound by the Buford Highway exit were closed temporarily as accident investigators reenacted a severe accident at the area where I-85 and I-75 southbound intersect by 17th Street.
The second accident reconstruction will be initiated after the initial reconstruction has been completed. This second traffic accident reenactment will require law enforcement officers to close down a portion of I-285 southbound by the Highway 166 exit. Each investigation exercise lasted approximately 30 minutes, and the interstates were reopened well before the morning rush hour.
