Car Accident Experts Discover Quality Headlights Are an Important Safety Feature to Save Lives

December 21, 2020

FLORIDA - According to an online news report published on CBSMiami.com, a new report published by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) states that more and more automakers are beginning to realize that quality headlights save lives. The study reports that although safety and design features help save lives during motor vehicle collisions, visibility at night is essential in preventing collisions.

IIHS President David Harkey reports that the statistics show that almost 50% of motor vehicle traffic fatalities in the United States transpire when it's dark.

After years of lobbying the auto manufacturing industry to design and integrate better headlights for their vehicles, the IIHS believes the auto industry is finally seeing the light. One of the key upgrades in lighting is using LED lighting. LED headlights outshine halogen headlights by as much as 100 feet. More visibility means the driver has more time to spot and react to a potential issue.

The IIHS rates headlights based on how far down the road the lights illuminate objects. These measurements are taken on a straight roadway and a curved roadway. The IIHS uses these measurements to determine which automobiles will earn their highest safety rating. IIHS reports that many 2021 models have improved headlight performance and will receive IIHS's highest safety rating.

Another safety feature that is becoming more standard is high beam assist. High beam assist automatically turns on the vehicle's high beams on a dark road with no traffic up ahead. It then automatically switches the headlights back to low beams when a vehicle is detected.

According to Mr. Harkey, research has discovered that high beams are a safety feature a lot of drivers do not use frequently. The high beam assist innovation now automatically helps drivers much further ahead. The IIHS believes this one feature alone could save many lives if the safety feature becomes standard.
