Cobb County Georgia Man Involved in SUV Rollover Accident

October 20, 2010

A Cobb County man was very lucky this week when he survived a single vehicle accident after his SUV rolled over leaving him trapped in a creek. The Cobb County police were able to rescue the man from the SUV which was flipped over and stuck in two feet of water. The man was transported to Atlanta Medical Hospital and was treated for his injuries.

Many people throughout Georgia are not nearly as lucky as this Cobb County man, and suffer serious injuries and even fatalities as a result of the defective design or lack of safety equipment associated with many SUVs. SUVs tend to be top heavy and prone to roll easily, but often lack sufficient roof reinforcement to protect occupants when a rollover accident does occur. The details of the Cobb County incident are still under investigation, but the danger posed by SUV rollover accidents is not a new occurrence. At Montlick and Associates, Attorneys at Law, we have been representing those seriously injured in auto accidents and rollover accidents throughout Georgia for over 38 years.

SUV rollover accidents are common but there are a number of measures one can take to help avoid SUV rollover accidents including:

  • Do not assume that you are safer in an SUV simply because of its bigger size and weight
  • Avoid overloading your SUV which can contribute to loss of control and rollover SUV accidents
  • Evaluate installed safety equipment, such as, roof safety rating, electronic stabilization equipment, side curtain airbags, etc.
  • Consider an SUV with rollover prevention or avoidance system that actually senses an impending rollover and triggers the electronic stability system to forestall it

While new SUV technology has helped reduce SUV rollover fatalities, the technology cannot completely overcome the risks. Tragically, many people throughout Georgia are still injured and killed each year in SUV rollover accidents. The fatality rate in SUV rollover accidents is typically much higher than in passenger vehicle collisions. Despite improvements in technology that have the capability of reducing the risk of being involved in an SUV rollover accident or to reduce the seriousness of one's injuries, many SUVs on Georgia roadways are not equipped with important safety equipment. Many SUVs still are extremely prone to SUV rollover accidents during very basic evasive maneuvers and lack roof reinforcement that may protect SUV occupants during such a rollover accident.
