The COVID-19 Pandemic is Causing Drivers to Engage in Risky Driving
The pandemic has caused more and more drivers to engage in risky driving behavior. About one-third of all traffic fatalities are speed-related deaths. Drunk driving arrests and instances of passengers not wearing seatbelts have significantly increased.
According to Pam Fischer with the Governors Highway Safety Association, most people say that they wear seatbelts, but half of the people who are killed in a motor vehicle accident are not wearing seatbelts. The Governors Highway Safety Association had a meeting last week to discuss strategies to persuade motorists to slow down while driving.
Fischer stated that the only feasible way to get drivers to slow down is to leverage technologies. The use of technology can help to change behavior. Fisher stated that they need to create a powerful message to make drivers slow down.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (GHTSA), the number of drunk and drugged drivers has also increased. The GHTSA and Lyft just bestowed five states, California, Illinois, Maine, Oregon, and Washington, with approximately $100,000 in grant money to help end drunk driving during the holiday season.
