Volkswagen Tiguan Seat Belt Defect "Would Seriously increase the Risk of Serious Personal Injury or Death"

December 14, 2020

According to a news report published on CARSCOOPS.COM, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) conducted crash tests on two 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan compact sport utility vehicles three years ago.  The test evaluated the overall crashworthiness of the compact sport utility vehicle.  NHTSA also tested the vehicle's standard safety equipment, including airbags, seat belts, anti-lock braking systems, and other accident safety equipment.  One test resulted in the driver's side seatbelt rupturing.

The news report states that Volkswagen was unable to determine the definitive reason why the seat belts ruptured.  The report states the potential defect could "seriously increase the risk of injury or death during an accident."  Volkswagen also alleged that the seat belt ruptures might have been the result of some type of "outside influence."

However, Volkswagen has yet to determine the source of the problem.  Although they are still investigating the issue, the automaker also reported that they had initiated a recall of all Tiguan LWB SUVs "out of an abundance of caution."  The recall only affects the Volkswagen Tiguan manufactured within the same group of the two test vehicles.  The recall affects about 10,800 units.

Volkswagen Tiguan owners affected by the recall will be notified and instructed to make a recall service appointment with a Volkswagen dealership.  Service technicians will then examine the front seatbelt assemblies and replace the assemblies with new seatbelt assemblies manufactured from another production lot.

The front seatbelt assembly recall is expected to start on January 19, 2021.  All recall-related repairs will be performed at no cost to the owners.
