The Five Most Dangerous States For Motorists During the Holidays

December 02, 2020

Alcohol, time of day, and speed are the three primary factors responsible for most fatal motor vehicle accidents. Researches reviewed crash data during the past several holiday seasons. The researchers then ranked the top five most dangerous states for motorists during the holiday season.

Mississippi - According to the researchers' findings, Mississippi is the most dangerous state for motorists during the holiday season. Although Mississippi ranks in the lower 20% in terms of population size, Mississippi has the highest traffic accident mortality rate of 2.72 deaths per 100,000 residents.

South Dakota - Although South Dakota has the sixth-smallest population in the United States, the state averages 24 fatalities per year during the holidays. The researchers believe that the mountainous topography and hazardous weather conditions in South Dakota might be the reason why South Dakota has such a high fatal accident rate.

Louisiana - Louisiana is the county's 25th most populous state. The State of Louisiana has one of the most dangerous interstates in the United States - Interstate 10. Interstate 10 crosses the entire state from west to east. I-10 also runs through the heart of New Orleans, which is Louisiana's most densely populated city.

New Mexico (tied with Louisiana) - Researches state that New Mexico's fatal accident rate is comparable to Louisiana, but the population of New Mexico almost half of Louisiana's population. New Mexico roads are also inclined to freeze due to the state's average low temperatures, which fall below freezing.

Alabama - Alabama's population is larger than the other states listed in the article. Alabama is the third gulf coast state to make the list of the five most dangerous states for motorists during the holidays. Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi all share similar cultures, which researchers believe influences their comparable high vehicle fatality rates around the holidays.
