Georgia State Patrol and Atlanta Police Hope Accidents Decline During the Thanksgiving Weekend
The Atlanta Police and Georgia State Patrol are hoping that there will be fewer fatal accidents over the Thanksgiving weekend.
Thanksgiving weekend is usually a very busy travel week. However, this year has not been a typical holiday weekend due to the pandemic. This year, law enforcement agencies have been increasingly prepared to help maintain safer roadways throughout the State of Georgia and drivers are encouraged to do their part as well.
Colonel Chris C. Wright, the Georgia Department of Public Safety Commissioner, stated that Georgia's troopers, local and county law enforcement officers will be patrolling highways and interstates throughout Georgia. The agencies are stepping up enforcement and police presence to help reduce the number of traffic accidents, assist motorists, deter bad driving, and generally help make Georgia's roadways safer this holiday weekend.
In 2019, twelve people died in fatal car accidents in Georgia during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. State troopers investigated hundreds of accidents that tragically killed twelve people and injured over two hundred people last year. Last year, four of the fatal accidents were in metro Atlanta.
In addition to the hundreds of accident investigations, over 340 people were arrested and charged with driving under the influence. Almost 12,000 people were issued citations, and over 16,000 received warnings.
Tips for Safe Driving During the Holiday Season
- Observe and obey the speed limit.
- Don't drive impaired by drugs or alcohol.
- Wear your seatbelt.
- Stay off of your phone while driving and avoid all distractions.
