Seven Million GM Vehicles Recalled Over Takata Airbag Defects
USA - GM recalled seven million vehicles over concerns about defective Takata airbags. The recall impacts pickup trucks and SUVs that were sold globally.
GM made the announcement this week after the government informed GM of the need to recall seven million GM motor vehicles sold globally. GM reports that it believes that the vehicles are safe; however, it stated that it would comply with the decision of the United States government. The recall is estimated to cost GM approximately 1.2 billion dollars, which is about one-third of the company's income this year.
According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA), the defective airbags still present a risk of explosions.
The Takata airbag recalls led to tens of millions of vehicles requiring repairs. The recalls are the largest in American history. Despite efforts to get dangerous vehicles off the road, more than eleven million vehicles remain in the country and have not yet been repaired. The issue with the airbags is caused by ammonium nitrate, which is used to cause a small reaction that will fill the airbags in the event of a collision. However, over time, if exposed to heat and humidity, the chemicals can become unstable and might explode with an excessive amount of force, leading to shrapnel being projected into the cabin of the car. Such explosions have already claimed eighteen lives in the United States and twenty-seven people worldwide.
