Report States One Out of Four Florida Drivers Are Driving Uninsured

November 18, 2020

According Forbes.com, one of four drivers in the Sunshine State may be driving without accident Insurance coverage, which is illegal in Florida.

If you are involved in an accident in the State of Florida, and you have an accident with an uninsured or underinsured driver who is at fault for the accident, you may have trouble recovering for your damages unless you have special auto insurance coverages to protect you against uninsured or underinsured drivers.

According to the Insurance Research Council, Florida has the highest percentage of uninsured drivers.  In addition to the issue of uninsured motorists, a significant number of drivers in Florida are illegally driving on a suspended license.  The Insurance Research Council believes the number of unlicensed drivers is about 2 million or 27% of drivers.

In Florida, certain auto insurance coverage and a valid driver’s license are mandatory.  Although it is assumed that approximately 14 million of Florida's 15 million registered vehicles have at least the required minimum car insurance coverage, drivers should not assume that insured drivers who cause an accident will be covered by the at fault driver's accident insurance coverage.  Insurance companies regularly deny claims if the driver is insured but does not have a valid driver's license.   So if you allow unlicensed driver to drive your automobile, and that person is then involved in a motor vehicle accident, your auto accident insurance company may deny coverage for the incident.

Florida drivers should at a minimum consider purchasing liability coverage, property damage coverage, and comprehensive collision and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage to safeguard you and your family from a major financial hardship if involved in an accident.
