Serious Motor Vehicle Recalls Initiated by GM & Ford Due to Accident Causing Defects

November 18, 2020

DETROIT, MI –  General Motors has recently issued a recall of over 217,000 automobiles in Canada and the United States due to a transmission oil can leak that may cause the vehicles to catch fire or abruptly stop travel.

The recall of the 217,000 vehicles includes versions of the 2018 through 2020 Traverse, GMC Terrain, and Chevrolet Equinox. Also a part of the recall is the 2018 and 2019 Buick LaCrosse and Chevrolet Cruze, and the 2019 and 2020 Buick Enclave and Encore, GMC Acadia. Chevrolet Blazer, and the Cadillac XT4.

GM has noted that there are two bolts that are possibly missing from the start-stop mechanism, causing transmission fluid to leak.  Despite the recall, the news reports do not report how many accidents or fires have been reported.  Dealerships are inspecting the faulty mechanism and will replace missing bolts.  The recall will begin on December 14, 2020.

GM has also issued a separate recall of 375,000 vehicles in Canada and the United States to address a suspension problem, which has been linked to multiple accidents with personal injuries.

Ford has recalled over 375,00 Ford Explorers to address a suspension issue that has led to thirteen accidents.  The recall covers vehicles in Canada and the United States. The recall includes sports utility vehicles from 2014 to 2017 models that are manufactured at Ford’s Chicago Assembly Plant. These were registered or sold in six Canadian provinces and 22 states where salt is commonly used address hazardous road conditions during the winter months.  According to the manufacturer, the rear tow links are susceptible to fracture, which can decrease steering control.

The function of a tow link is to place weight on tires so they remain on the ground.  Per Ford, six individuals sustained injuries due to the malfunction of the tow link.  Dealerships are inspecting the suspension and replacing parts, if warranted.  Customers will be notified starting the week of November 30, 2020.
