Serious Crashes Are on Rise as Traffic Declines in Georgia

November 13, 2020

GEORGIA -  Even though traffic has been lighter during the COVID-19 pandemic, it has not improved road safety in the Peach State.

Data now indicates that despite the decreased number of vehicles on the road, collisions are on the rise. On average, a decline of 60 percent has been reported in traffic in the state, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

However, since the pandemic led to stay at home orders in sparsely trafficked roadways, fatalities have increased. Some factors likely causing these issues to include speeding, failure to buckle up, and distracted driving. Police report that they are issuing far more citations for drivers traveling 24 miles per hour above the speed limit. Officials point out that at speeds that far above the recommended limits, the risk of severe collisions is high. The odds of these collisions occurring without severe injuries is low. So far, in 2020, 1,297 people died in car crashes. Last year during the same period of time, 1,269 people were killed in collisions on the state's roads. The numbers indicate a rise of nearly 30 fatalities.

The Georgia Department of Transportation and the Georgia State patrol are both attempting to encourage drivers to slow down, use caution, and buckle up on the road. This will become increasingly important while we head into Thanksgiving, which creates more traffic on the roadway.

Some states have also shown the rate of drunk and otherwise impaired motorists is also increasing. This is also likely leading to increased road hazards. It appears as though young men are responsible for many of these driving-related risks.

It is well documented that most accidents can be prevented with a little extra care and safety education.  Since 1984, Montlick & Associates has been dedicated to keeping children and families safe on the roadway.  Our commitment runs deep through our extensive, award-winning public service programs that provide people the information they need to avoid injuries.  To learn about our Don't Drink and Drive Campaign, Child Passenger Safety Programs, Booster Seat Campaign and much more, visit montlick.com and click on “community service,” or simply click here.
