School Bus Related Personal Injuries in the United States

November 09, 2020

USA- School bus crashes caused 117 tragic fatalities in the United States according to a report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and National Safety Council.

Based on the definition provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, collisions included in statistics regarding school bus crashes are any vehicles used as school buses. The definition is not dependent on the design of the vehicle, but rather its purpose. The data includes fatal crashes involving students who were exiting the bus or getting on the bus at the time of the accident.

Over the course of the study, 70 percent of the individuals tragically killed in school bus crashes were people traveling in other vehicles. Data included all crashes recorded between 2009 and 2018. Only 5 percent of those killed in school bus crashes were passengers on the bus at the time. Drivers account for another four percent of victims, meaning in total, nine percent of victims were individuals on school buses at the time of the crash. Two percent of those killed were cyclists.

School bus crashes are more likely to result in injuries to occupants than they are to lead to fatalities. Data regarding individuals injured in school bus crashes between 2008 and 2018 indicates 36 percent of those harmed were passengers on school buses at the time of the crash. Again, people traveling in other vehicles account for a larger percentage of those injured in school bus crashes.

Data indicates 51 percent of victims injured were traveling in other vehicles that crashed with school buses. The remainder of the victims include drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists. Despite the fact that some school bus crashes do result in tragedies, the National Safety Council indicates school buses are still the safest option for transporting children to and from school. Studies indicate that school buses are safer than walking and traveling by passenger vehicle.
