Tragedies Mount on Deadly Stretch of I-20 Between Exit 175 and Exit 190 in Georgia

October 14, 2020

GROVETOWN, GA — The Georgia Department of Transportation reported that 337 motor vehicle accidents have occurred within the fifteen miles between Exit 175 and Exit 190. The accidents have happened over the last three years, including two that occurred recently.

Five fatal accidents have occurred in the last three years. Three of the deadly crashes happened within the last few weeks. Coincidentally, 25 percent of the fatal crashes have happened in the area of Exit 190 in Grovetown.

A retired deputy who frequently patrolled the area offered some incite into the problem. He said that speeding drivers and "last-minute lane changes" often cause crashes in the area. The former law enforcement officer also noted that the danger has significantly increased within the last ten years due to road construction. From his experience and observation, drivers do not slow down in construction zones as they should, and more crashes happen as a result.

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has several projects underway on I-20. GDOT is widening lanes on Lewistown Road. A spokesperson speaking on behalf of GDOT stated that the project is in response to the population growth of Columbia County.  Two state projects are currently underway as well. Exit 172 is the location of one of the projects, and exit 183 is the other location.

GDOT prioritizes safety. The agency set up signs to warn motorists about the construction areas, especially lane closures and areas where traffic slows.
