Insurance Rates and Risks Go Up When Drivers "Car Tune"

October 12, 2020

USA- Drivers who engage in car tuning, modifying a vehicle, can suffer a number of repercussions. One likely result is an increase in that person's insurance rates. On average, the insurance rates for these drivers will increase by about five percent.

The higher prices could be a combination of a greater risk of crashes as well as the appeal of these modified vehicles to car thieves. In many cases, drivers who modify their cars do not inform their insurers. While this will prevent the higher insurance rates, it can lead to serious problems if that driver becomes involved in a collision. It is possible that the insurance company will refuse coverage or paying on a claim if it learns that the car underwent modifications which the owner failed to report.

One study also found that drivers who modify their cars are about 27 percent more at risk of being involved in a collision. Some car modifications violate laws, such as is the case with tinted windows of a certain calibre or modification of brake lights. Either of these features can lead to higher risks and lower visibility. It is also possible the police will issue citations because these cars are in violation of regulations. For drivers who insist on car tuning, it is important to understand that modifying your vehicle can reduce its resale value. If you do modify your vehicle, make sure to get the work done at a reputable garage that does not impact the safety and handling of your vehicle.  Inform your insurer of any modifications to avoid violating your insurance policy in the event you are involved in a wreck in the future.
