Michigan Releases Information Regarding the Most Common Causes of Accidental Injuries in the State

October 12, 2020

MICHIGAN- Car crashes are a major problem in the state and across the nation. Officials recently released statistics regarding the top causes of car crash-related injuries in the state. The number one cause of car accidents involved drivers departing from their lanes or from the road.

These incidents led to 46 percent of all deadly crashes in Michigan. Thirty-nine percent of deadly wrecks involve drunk or otherwise impaired motorists. More than one in four of these collisions happened at intersections. Older drivers were involved in twenty-two percent of crashes, and twenty-one percent of motorists failed to use their seatbelts. Pedestrians and cyclists accounted for eighteen percent of crash fatalities and fifteen percent of those involved for drivers under the age of twenty. Officials also pointed out that many of these crashes are caused by distracted drivers.

The Michigan Department of Transportation reported that when something is referred to as an accident, people tend to believe that the incident did not involve fault. More accurately, these incidents should be referred to as crashes as the drivers tend to be responsible in most collisions. Many of the motorists involved in these crashes were looking at their phones when they were driving their cars.

The tragedy of the statistics is that so many of these incidents are entirely preventable. With about one out of every five people involved in these tragic wrecks failing to use their seat belt, it becomes clear that many deadly crashes need not result in fatalities. Drivers sometimes must contend with unpredictable actions taken by other motorists as well as by pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists on the road. However, a driver who is behaving responsibly and focusing on the road will have a better chance of avoiding collisions even when other drivers or other individuals may be partially at fault.
