Traffic Crash Injuries Continue to Increase in Georgia
GEORGIA- Gwinnettdailypost.com writes that trauma statistics are declining nationally but not universally throughout the United States. Injuries caused by stab wounds and gunshots do not indicate signs of dropping, but car crash deaths nationally have declined. However, in metro Atlanta, car crash-related injuries are not dropping.*
Police in the state report that they are writing fewer citations overall, but that tickets involving drivers traveling at speeds of 100 mph or greater are up by two-thirds. Local police officers also report rates of high-speed driving are increasing as compared to the same time last year. It appears that the pandemic is also leading to an increase in alcohol consumption. With more people consuming alcohol, related health risks are also on the rise. In fact, alcohol-related car crashes are also increasing.
Studies indicate that high-risk driving behaviors, such as speeding, and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, are on the rise because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Young men, in particular, are showing a higher rate of dangerous driving as compared to rates from prior to mid-March of 2020.*
Traffic patterns changed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. With more people spending time at home, fewer cars are out on the road. With light traffic, drivers are more inclined to speed. Studies are now indicating that the percentage of drivers killed in car crashes, who are found to have been under the influence of alcohol, marijuana, and opioids, are all higher than they were a year ago. Young men are more inclined to engage in all these behaviors based on data than are women. As a result, the rate of crash fatalities per mile has increased significantly across the country.
