Study Finds Ten States Present a Higher Danger Risk to Child Passengers

October 06, 2020

USA - Children face different risk levels depending on the state in which they are vehicle passengers. Go Safe Labs, which is a nonprofit dedicated to transportation safety, studied crash-related data from 2015 through 2018.

Based on that data, Go Safe Labs found that children face a greater risk of suffering injuries in rural places as opposed to urban locations. More than half, 57 percent, of children involved in car accidents were in rural places at the time. In Arizona, Florida, Illinois, and Georgia, urban crashes presented greater risks to children. The ten most dangerous places for children to be passengers in cars are Texas, California, Florida, Indiana, Georgia, North Carolina, Alabama, Illinois, Arizona, and Ohio.

Recommendations for making children safer on the road include providing access to child safety seats for every family in the United States, offering car seat education courses for all families, providing car seat installation checks to all families, and updating the law to represent child passenger safety recommendations. Many children who are using child safety seats are still at risk because families often incorrectly install those seats.

It is important to ensure that these safety devices are being used properly as improper installation reduces the effectiveness and puts children at risk.

It is well documented that most accidents can be prevented with a little extra care and safety education.  Since 1984, Montlick & Associates has been dedicated to keeping children and families safe on the roadway.  Our commitment runs deep through our extensive, award-winning public service programs that provide people the information they need to avoid injuries.  To learn about our Don't Drink and Drive Campaign, Child Passenger Safety Programs, Booster Seat Campaign and much more, visit montlick.com and click on “community service,” or simply click here.
