The City of Columbus Has a Pedestrian Crash Problem

September 25, 2020

COLUMBUS, GA- Officials in Georgia note that Columbus has earned a reputation as being a dangerous place to walk. Law enforcement states that the need to use caution goes both ways and that drivers and pedestrians in the state both must use extra care when on the road.*

One officer complained that pedestrians in the city are not using crosswalks and lights, which do exist throughout much of the city.

So far, in 2020, six people have died in pedestrian crashes in the city. There are two particular areas where these crashes are occurring more often. One of the locations in Victory Drive, and the other is Veteran's Parkway. Columbus has also experienced a number of hit-and-runs, including one that killed a 40-year-old woman, who was a mother of four. In that crash, the driver fled the scene, leaving the woman tragically dead.

The family of the victim is looking for answers.

One officer explained that drivers who are involved in pedestrian crashes sometimes get nervous and scared and then flee. That officer said that people need to be good human beings and stay to offer aid to the victim after such a crash. Also, fleeing the scene of any crash is a criminal offense.

Officers understand that something must be done to combat the high number of tragic pedestrian crashes in the city. In order to do so, they say that they are increasing patrols. The local police are also working with the Georgia Department of Transportation to study traffic patterns and possible issues with lights and other infrastructure.

Pedestrian deaths dropped nationally in 2019. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that these deaths declined as well as cyclist fatalities. Given that tragic pedestrian crashes have been on the rise across the United States for several years, the sign is a good one.
