Florida Lawmakers Move to Make Daylight Savings Time Year-Round
FL- Daylight Savings Time is under criticism in many parts of the country. The policy helped during the 1970s when the United States was in the midst of an energy crisis, but now people are beginning to wonder whether it is worthwhile.*
Florida is one of several states looking to change its Daylight Savings Time policy. In Florida, the bill is aimed at keeping daylight savings year round during the pandemic. Some in the state are questioning whether the bill should be considered time-sensitive given the backlog of legislation in the state at this time. There are more than 300 other bills waiting to be deliberated on.
If passed, the extension of Daylight Savings Time would only last until November of 2021.
Daylight savings time is controversial because of the fact that it can lead to sleep disturbances. Studies have shown that the population overall becomes more tired, and in some instances, this can lead to issues at work and even on the road. After Daylight Savings Time ends in the spring, there is an uptick in car crashes. Fatigue is a serious risk on the road, and the loss of just one hour of sleep can lead to more tiredness and, therefore, a higher risk of crashes.
One of the reasons for the proposed change is that many families are struggling with managing time as they homeschool their children and work from home at the same time during the pandemic.
If the extension does go into effect, it will impact the time differences with other states where Daylight Savings Time is still expiring in the spring.
