Ford and Hyundai Announce Recalls Associated with Fire and Collision Risks
While any product with a manufacturing or design defect may have the potential to cause injury, motor vehicle defects pose a more substantial risk because so many people are injured or die in motor vehicle accidents annually. Two recent recalls serve as a reminder of the importance of vehicle safety in preventing potential injury in motor vehicle collisions.
The most serious of the recent recalls involves a Ford Motor Company recall of the Lincoln MKS Taurus model year 2012 and the 2013 model Explorer. The recall is based on the risk of fire or explosion because of a potential fuel leak hazard. The vehicles covered by the recall may leak gasoline or have their fuel tank ruptured in a collision because of a marginally sealed seam in the gas tank, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Because of the faulty seal the fuel tank may not have sufficient strength to withstand the impact of a collision, which could result in a fire and/or explosion. Owners of the vehicles subject to the recall can contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332 or the NHTSA Hotline at 1-888-3427-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.safercar.gov. Ford will be replacing the faulty fuel tanks as necessary without any cost to vehicle owners.
Hyundai Motor Corp and Kia Motors also announced a recall of more than a million vehicles involving a defective switch. The NHTSA has indicated that the defective switch could increase the risk of a collision involving the vehicles subject to the recall. The malfunctioning switch may prevent a vehicle’s brake lights from lighting up when the brake pedal is depressed or prevent deactivation of the cruise control when the brake pedal is engaged according to federal regulators.
The federal safety agency says that the defective switch also could cause other problems, such as disrupting the push button start function, inhibiting the shift level from being moved from park and allowing the vehicle to be put in drive without depressing the brake pedal. The agency specifically addressed the potential accident risks posed by the switch, indicating that the failure of brake lights to illuminate or the cruise control to be disabled when braking could increase the probability of a collision. The gear shift issues could lead to a collision caused by a vehicle rollaway according to the NHTSA.
The vehicles affected by the faulty switch include Tucson SUVs and Accent cars model years 2007-2010, Santa Fe SUVs 2007-2011, Genesis coupes cars 2010-2011, Elantras 2007-2010, Vera Cruz SUVs 2008-2009 and Sonata cars 2011. The company will replace the switch free of charge according to the NHTSA. For more information visit the NHTSA website or use their toll free hotline, both of which are provided above.
