Road Fatalities Increased in Georgia Over Labor Day While Decreased in South Carolina

September 10, 2020

GEORGIA- Georgia experienced a tragic increase in car crash fatalities over the Labor Day weekend, according to ONLINEATHENS.COM. There were 32 deaths combined in two states, Georgia and South Carolina, with nineteen fatalities taking place in Georgia, and thirteen in South Carolina. The numbers come from the period from six in the evening on Friday through Monday night.*

Last year in the same stretch of time, only nine people were killed on Georgia’s roads. Not only did this year mark a jump as compared to 2019, but the state’s numbers were the highest in five years.

South Carolina lost sixteen people to Labor Day weekend crashes in 2019, and therefore saw a drop of three deaths this year.

According to reports, the Georgia State Patrol responded to 331 crashes over Labor Day, and 176 people were injured in those incidents. Drunk driving remained a problem, and 309 people were arrested for DUIs. Police were busy writing up motorists for a variety of driving violations and issued close to 9,000 tickets and more than 10,000 warnings. About 4,600 of those overall tickets were for speeding, and 541 distracted driving citations were issued. More than one thousand people failed to buckle up, and 169 drivers did not put their children in safety restraints.

In South Carolina, 148 people were arrested for driving under the influence. Drivers in the Palmetto State were issued 5,397 tickets over the long weekend.

The holiday is one of the deadliest and marks the end of the 100 deadliest days of summer - which began with Memorial Day.

The National Safety Council states that the percent of traffic deaths involving alcohol rises over Labor Day weekend. On average, 29 percent of such crashes are alcohol-related. The number jumped to 38 percent over the weekend.
