Report Highlights America's Worst Cities for Drivers in Terms of Traffic and Infrastructure

September 04, 2020

USA- Americans use cars for the vast majority of their transportation needs. In fact, 87 percent of trips in the United States happen in personal automobiles. The COVID-19 pandemic is making a case for owning a car for many people who used crowded public transportation prior to the pandemic.

With the outbreak of a dangerous virus, sharing space with others on a packed bus or train can be difficult. A private way of getting around might be less risky, or at least easier than current alternatives. Still, it is important to note that driving has some serious downsides. For one thing, Americans spend 310 hours in their cars on average each year. That amounts to almost two weeks of sitting in a vehicle.

While sitting in a car four thirteen days out of the year already sounds unpleasant to many people, the reality is that those hours are worse in some places than they are in others. The quality of the roads in various locations is one of the main factors that impact the driving experience. When it comes to US roads, studies indicate there is a lot of work that needs to be done.

In terms of traffic and infrastructure, the worst areas tend to be some of the biggest, including New York, Chicago, and Newark. In safety rankings, Memphis was found to be the worst, followed by St. Louis, Detroit, Birmingham, Albuquerque, Miami, Baltimore, and Orlando.

Several southeastern cities landed on the worst part of the list given that the southeast is the only part of the country in which fatal crashes increased last year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
