Campaign to Prevent Drunk Driving Aims to Make U.S. Roads Safer

September 08, 2020

FLORIDA- A campaign aimed at getting drivers to stay sober or get pulled over is working to ensure that drivers do not get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol. The national campaign involves high-visibility enforcement of drunk driving laws, and officers will have zero tolerance for motorists who are under the influence.*

The Florida Highway Patrol highlighted the importance of the laws, pointing out that impaired drivers kill nearly 30 people a day and that these drivers still kill more people on the road than any other cause. Police in the Sunshine State says they want nothing less than to eliminate the practice of drunk driving.

Drunk driving crashes are a significant threat to road safety, and while these collisions are on the decline, they still kill thousands of people a year. Drivers with a BAC of .05 percent or higher have a high risk of being involved in a wreck. When a person has a BAC of .08 percent, the risk rises even faster. At .15 percent, the dangers of being involved in a crash spike.

In most states, the legal limit is .08 percent, in spite of the fact that drivers are at an inflated risk of being involved in a crash when BAC levels are at .05 percent.

The laws differ for drivers who are under 21 years of age. For young motorists, there is a zero-tolerance policy for driving under the influence of alcohol, and even a BAC under .08 will be considered illegal.

It is well documented that most accidents can be prevented with a little extra care and safety education.  Since 1984, Montlick & Associates has been dedicated to keeping children and families safe on the roadway.  Our commitment runs deep through our extensive, award-winning public service programs that provide people the information they need to avoid injuries.  To learn about our Don't Drink and Drive Campaign, Child Passenger Safety Programs, Booster Seat Campaign and much more, visit montlick.com and click on “community service,” or simply click here.
