Campaign Reminds Motorists of the Risks of Driving Drunk
USA - The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is reminding drivers across the country not to operate their cars after drinking alcohol.
Drunk driving is one of the main causes of fatal collisions across the country. As Labor Day approaches, the message becomes more important given that holidays often come with an uptick in motorists who are under the influence.
Data from 2018 indicated that there were 10,511 deadly motor vehicle collisions that were the result of drivers who were under the influence of alcohol. It is illegal to drive with a BAC of .08 percent or more, and yet people who violate this law cause around 29 percent of all fatal crashes. In fact, many fatal crashes involve drivers with BACs of .15 percent or more. These motorists have so much alcohol in their system that they are nearly two times the legal limit, if not more.
The NHTSA campaign aims to prevent these tragic crashes by reminding people not to make this often deadly mistake in the first place. Part of the key to preventing drunk driving crashes is planning ahead. Friends, family, and individuals making plans to celebrate at events that involve alcohol should select a designated driver, or use an alternate safe form of transportation, such as by taking a rideshare.
