Officer Nearly Killed When Trucker Failed to Follow Move Over Law in Greene County, Georgia (GA)

August 30, 2020

GREENE COUNTY, GA - A police officer was nearly struck by a truck this week because a driver failed to follow the state’s Move Over Law. The law is designed to prevent drivers from getting too close to emergency workers who are on the side of the road. Specifically, drivers are meant to move one lane over to provide responders with more space when they have flashing lights on.*

In cases where traffic prevents a driver from safely moving over, the motorist still must slow down significantly, and be ready to stop.

Officers point out that with interstates being extremely crowded, there are many situations where pulling over is not possible. Drivers who fail to slow down put others at risk and can face a hefty fine. The fines can amount to $500.

Not only is the law in place to prevent emergency workers from sustaining injuries, but it is also there to help the Department of Transportation workers, tow truck operators, and anyone else on the road performing services.

Nationally, 49 police officers tragically died in crashes, and more than one dozen died when cars struck them while they were working outside of their vehicles.

A police camera recently caught one of these harrowing experiences on film in Georgia. An officer was speaking to a woman he pulled over for speeding when a second driver crashed into the officer’s vehicle. The impact pushed the officer’s SUV into the officer, knocking him into the woman he had stopped. The woman fell over a guardrail. Police suspect that the driver who caused the crash was drunk at the time.
