Officials to Improve Newberry Road Intersection with 98th Street
GAINESVILLE, FL- Officials are moving to improve the intersection of Newberry Road and Northwest 98th Street in Gainesville in an effort to improve safety in the area. Several incidents occurred at the crossroads, and many feel that the intersection itself is creating dangers for those who drive the local roads.*
Part of the issue is that drivers are often confused as to who has the right of way at the intersection.
One woman wrote a complaint stating that drivers who are exiting Hamilton Heights and traveling northbound have the right-of-way, and yet those on Newberry Road often appear to believe that they can turn left as soon as they have a green signal. The confusion increases the chances of a crash. After a severe collision did take place in the area, locals began discussing the need to contact the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) in an effort to prevent further accidents.
Now officials state that improvements may be in the works. Alachua County is in charge of 98th Street, but the state is responsible for Newberry Road. Both the state and the county are aware of the fact that the intersection is in need of improvements. Changes may include reconfiguring the lanes and altering the signals. and will be in contact with officials from FDOT as well.
